Former Premier League star Jamie Carragher has heavily criticized Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for his performance in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield Stadium. Carragher said the goalkeeper’s indecisiveness allowed the Merseysiders to secure maximum points in the Premier League Matchday 8 clash.

Curtis Jones’ Goal Secured Liverpool Win at Anfield

Looking to return to the top of the Premier League rankings, Liverpool welcomed Chelsea to Merseyside on Sunday evening, October 20. Despite their sluggish start, the Reds got their noses in front in the 29th minute, with Mohamed Salah converting from the penalty spot. The Pensioners pushed hard for the equalizer for the remainder of the first half, but the Reds stubbornly held on to carry their slender advantage into the second half.

Three minutes into the second half, Chelsea equalized, with Nicolas Jackson cleverly beating the offside trap before scoring. However, Chelsea’s joy was short-lived, as Curtis Jones scored the winner in the 51st minute from close range.

After getting away from Reece James, the midfielder received Salah’s delivery with his right foot. However, his first touch was a tad too heavy, giving Chelsea goalkeeper Sanchez the opportunity to come out and claim it. Much to the visiting fans’ dismay, the Spaniard failed to capitalize, allowing Jones the room to put the ball away with his right foot.

Jamie Carragher Slams Chelsea Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez

Discussing Jones’ winner on Sky Sports, Liverpool legend Carragher said (via GOAL):

It’s so poor from Chelsea’s point. Reece James ambles in there. The goalkeeper is so poor. It was a poor touch from Curtis Jones really, and it’s poor from the goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez.

Sanchez has got to go and win that ball. Jones should be terrified that a goalkeeper is coming towards him. You have got to get there and hope it hits you in the face and you keep it out. Chelsea need a new goalkeeper if they want to get back to where they want to be.

Maresca’s goalkeeper of choice Sanchez has played eight Premier League matches this season, conceding 10 goals and keeping two clean sheets. The 26-year-old’s contract with the Pensioners runs out in June 2030.
