Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has explained how Manchester United could land one of the most successful managers in the world, Zinedine Zidane. The Frenchman believes the Red Devils must give the three-time UEFA Champions League-winning manager certain assurances to have a shot at appointing him.

Having overseen the worst start to a Premier League campaign in Manchester United’s history, manager Erik ten Hag finds himself under insurmountable pressure. The Mancunians have amassed just eight points from their first seven league matches and are toiling in 14th place in the Premier League rankings. They have also failed to find their footing in the UEFA Europa League, drawing their first two games against FC Twente and Porto.

For the time being, Manchester United have retained their faith in Ten Hag. However, according to reports, the Dutchman is on very thin ice and could get the sack long before the season concludes.

Many managers have been linked with the Man Utd job, including Zidane. However, according to Petit, landing the Real Madrid icon could take some doing.

Speaking with Manchester Evening News, Petit said:

I’m not sure that he speaks very good English as well. And communication is very important in the dressing room. Honestly, I know a little bit, Zizou [Zidane], and he needs to get guarantees if he wants to sign over there in Manchester United.

At the moment, the environment at Manchester United for years has not been good. The stability of the bench, the level of the players as well, the expectation of the club is not the same that it used to be. United is still a huge club, but not on the pitch anymore.

He concluded by adding:

And Zizou is very conscious and very careful about that, the quality of the players. At the moment, when you look at the team, I’m not convinced at all about the level of some players. If he takes the job at Manchester United, that means he’s got solutions.”

Zidane has been without a job since he resigned from his post at Real Madrid at the end of the 2020-21 season. According to reports, Zidane dreams of managing the France national team — currently managed by Didier Deschamps — and does not want to let other projects get in the way.
