Dolphins running back depth chart breakdown following a Week 1 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars

The Miami Dolphins secured a come-from-behind win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at home in Miami in Week 1. So, how did the Dolphins utilize their running backs in Week 1?

Here is the Dolphins RB depth chart breakdown for Week 1.

Dolphins RB Depth Chart Breakdown

Jason Sanders drilled a 52-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Miami Dolphins to a thrilling 20-17 season-opening win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in Miami Gardens. Trailing 17-7 at halftime, Miami’s defense stepped up, shutting out the Jaguars in the second half to pave the way for the comeback victory.

De’Von Achane significantly impacted the passing game and led the Dolphins in snaps, playing 37 compared to Raheem Mostert’s 31. Though the workload was fairly split, Jeff Wilson Jr. contributed late with 11 snaps, making the most of his fresh legs by averaging 5.2 yards on five carries. Overall, the ground game lacked explosiveness, with neither Mostert nor Achane finding much success running the ball. However, Achane shined in the passing attack, hauling in seven receptions for 76 yards. He also scored the Dolphins’ first touchdown of the season, punching in a 1-yard run—an area the team struggled with in 2023.

Head coach Mike McDaniel also mixed in fullback Alec Ingold on key short-yardage plays, dialing up two third-and-one runs, both of which were successfully converted. Ingold matched his total carries from last season in this game alone. Notably, in 2023, the Dolphins ranked near the bottom of the league in third-and-short rushing attempts, a trend McDaniel seems intent on reversing.

Jeff Wilson effectively played the closer role, finishing with five rushes for 26 yards in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory.
