Premier League clubs smoked their competition in terms of transfer expenditures in the 2024-25 summer session. According to ESPN, Premier League clubs’ net spend — expenditure minus income — this summer was around €746.5 million ($827.7 million). In contrast, La Liga, the second-most popular soccer league on the planet, reported expenditure of around €555.6 million ($616.6 million).

Chelsea, who have been on a buying spree since Todd Boehly took over the club, spent around €238.5 million ($264.1 million) on new arrivals in the 2024-25 summer transfer window. No club spent as much during the session. Interestingly, however, the Blues are not one of the five Premier League clubs featuring on today’s list. Tottenham Hotspur capped off the 2024-25 summer transfer window with a net spending of €93.5 million ($103.7 million). The Lilywhites, who are eager to finish inside the top four this season, spent €148.8 million ($165.1 million) on new signings and earned €55.3 million ($61.4 million) from offloading out-of-favor players.

Spurs spent the largest portion of their transfer fees on Dominic Solanke. They paid €64.3 million ($71.3 million) to sign the striker from Bournemouth. Defensive midfielder Oliver Skipp, meanwhile, was their most profitable departure, as he earned the club €23.5 million ($26.1 million) when he joined Leicester City.

Ligue 1 holders Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is sitting in ninth place with net spending of €98.4 million ($109.2 million). The Parisians spent €169.9 million ($188.5 million) to bring new players to the club and made €71.5 million ($79.3 million) from selling players that did not fit into Luis Enrique’s plans.

Les Parisiens spent the most money on defensive midfielder Joao Neves. The Portuguese midfielder joined from Benfica for €59.9 million ($66.5 million). Manuel Ugarte, meanwhile, was PSG’s most expensive departure, with the Uruguayan joining Manchester United for €50 million ($55.5 million).

Premier League outfit West Ham United spent €99.6 million ($110.5 million) more on transfers than they earned through sales. The Hammers splurged €144.4 million ($160.2 million) on new signings and made €44.7 million ($49.6 million) from shipping off unwanted/wantaway players.

Center-back Max Kilman was West Ham’s most expensive purchase of the summer. The London outfit had to pay Wolverhampton Wanderers €47.5 million ($52.7 million) for the defender. Flynn Downes, who joined Southampton for €17.8 million ($19.7 million), was their biggest sale.

Center-back Mohamed Simakan was Al-Nassr’s most expensive signing of the summer. The 24-year-old joined from RB Leipzig for a handsome €42 million ($46.6 million) fee. Muhammed Salhouli, who switched to Al-Riyadh for €121k ($134.3k), was Al-Nassr’s only permanent sale of the summer.

In sixth place, we have Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Lyon with a net summer spending of €109.1 million ($121.1 million). Lyon spent €147.8 million ($164 million) on new signings and earned €38.7 million ($42.9 million) from selling/loaning out their players.

Lyon spent a handsome €31.9 million ($35.4 million) to sign center-back Moussa Niakhate from Nottingham Forest. It was Forest’s most expensive signing of the summer. Jake O’Brien, who moved to Everton for €19.5 million ($21.6 million), was their most valuable sale.

The Red Devils spent €214.5 million to bring in fresh faces and earned a solid €103 million from selling players surplus to requirements.

Leny Yoro, who joined Manchester United from LOSC Lille for a hefty €62 million ($68.8 million), was United’s most expensive summer transfer. Scott McTominay, on the other hand, was United’s most profitable sale, with the Scotland international costing Napoli €30.5 million ($33.8 million).

Right-winger Omari Hutchinson was Ipswich’s biggest summer swing, with the club paying Chelsea a handsome €23.5 million ($26.1 million) for the 20-year-old. Gassan Ahadme, who joined Charlton Athletic in League One for €1.18 million ($1.3 million), was their most profitable sale.

Georginio Rutter was Brighton’s most expensive summer signing, with the Premier League outfit paying Leed United a healthy €46.7 million ($51.82 million) fee for the striker’s services. Deniz Undav, meanwhile, was their biggest sale. Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart paid €26.7 million ($29.6 million) for the striker.
