In New York, operators are looking to add online casinos to their existing sports betting products. A recent poll suggests that many voters are undecided but there is support for iGaming to be legalized. New York State Senator Joe Addabbo conducted a poll in his district this past May. The data showed that 44% of the 532 constituents were in favor of iGaming being added to the Empire State. However, 33% of voters opposed iGaming and 23% were undecided on what they wanted to see happen. Joe Addabbo had this comment to say in his poll asking about iGaming.

With many New York residents participating in illegal, unregulated, and unsafe gaming operations over the Internet, I introduced legislation allowing licensed interactive gaming operators to offer online casino games to the public. Steps to protect consumers, combat compulsive gaming, and prevent minors from accessing online gaming sites are included. iGaming would create an estimated $1 billion in additional revenue annually and create jobs.” said Addabbo. “Do you support or oppose iGaming?”

What is Joe Addabbo’s main takeaway after seeing the data provided from his poll?

According to Joe Addabbo, New York residents are hesitant to expand iGaming in the state. During the Senate’s latest session, another poll was held in New York that asked residents a simple question. Do they want to see taxes raised in the state or would they rather iGaming be legalized? Joe Addabbo said the answer is simple. Nobody wants to see taxes raised and implementing iGaming into the market is an easy choice. The state Senator has to be thorough when he is explaining iGaming and problem gambling to those in his community. If citizens are educated on iGaming and its benefits, it would be easier for them to vote and have an opinion.

Addabbo noted that he doesn’t see much happening with online casinos for the rest of the year. One of the largest hurdles that still needs to be crossed is obtaining downstate casino licenses. Senator Addabbo wanted to expedite the process but that seems unlikely to happen. He’s frustrated with how the governor has handled the awarding of the downstate casino licenses. Despite what Addabbo has tried to do to expand iGaming in New York, the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council has repeatedly opposed the expansion of online gaming. For now, Addabbo and his peers will look for another way to implement iGaming into the market. Their next shot will be during a 2025 session.
