Through six weeks, the 2024 college football season has brought plenty of surprises. This is also the first year of the expanded 12-team playoff. One of the biggest storylines of the 2024 season has been the Boise State Broncos and their talented RB, Ashton Jeanty. Despite receiving numerous offers to play at a larger school this season, he stayed true to Boise State.

Jeanty started the 2024 season hot and he hasn’t slowed down. His 1,031 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns currently leads the nation. No RB in the country is even close to having the same production as Jeanty in his first five games. After Week 6 in the 2024 CFB season, Ashton Jeanty has the lowest odds (+225) to win the Heisman Trophy this season.

Ashton Jeanty Is On Pace To Break Records in 2024

In recent history, the Heisman Trophy has been a QB award. There are outliers like DeVonta Smith in 2020 but it’s often a QB who wins. Six weeks into the 2024 CFB season, a QB is not even in the top two for the lowest odds. Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty (+225) is the favorite to win about halfway through the season.

Not far behind Jeanty is Colorado’s Travis Hunter at (+300). Ashton Jeanty plays for a group of five school, compared to Travis Hunter in the Big 12. The last player to win the Heisman Trophy at a current Group of 5 schools was Rodger Staubach in 1963 with the Navy. Ty Detmer won the Heisman in 1990 with BYU, but they are now part of the Big 12 and now a Group of 5.

Who Was The Last Running Back To Win The Heisman Trophy?

The last RB to win the Heisman Trophy was Alabama’s Derrick Henry in 2015. Henry finished his Heisman season with 2,219 yards and 28 touchdowns in 15 games. Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty is currently on pace to break Henry’s rushing feat from 2015. Additionally, he is on track to beat Barry Sanders’ 1988 record at Oklahoma State with 2,628 rushing yards. Jeanty has been the best player in the country to start the 2024 season.
