Rice injured his knee in the first quarter of Week 4’s 17-10 victory.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an interception in the first quarter. Rice chased the play down from behind and forced a fumble. However, Mahomes collided with Rice’s knee, leading to the injury.
Rice left the game and never returned.
Head coach Andy Reid announced on Thursday that Rice is going on IR and will miss at least four games.
The initial prognosis was an ACL tear that would end Rice’s season. However, there is some optimism that Rice could return for the postseason.
Reid said the doctors are waiting for the swelling to reduce in Rice’s knee before undergoing further testing next week.
"We're getting the swelling out of his knee, and then he's got further tests next week."

With Rice out, who will the Chiefs turn to at receiver?
Kansas City will likely employ a committee of pass-catchers before settling on one or two receivers moving forward.
The receiving options are Xavier Worthy, Justin Watson, Mecole Hardman, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Skyy Moore.
The obvious candidate to make up for Rice’s production is Travis Kelce. The All-Pro tight end had his best game in Week 4 with seven catches for 89 yards.
Rice leads the Chiefs with 24 receptions and 288 yards. His two touchdown receptions are also tied for the team lead.
