The governing body of association soccer, Fédération Internationale de Football Association, aka FIFA, refreshes its global soccer rankings after each international session. On September 19, FIFA released the latest rankings, awarding and snatching points away from teams based on their most recent showings.

Below, we will check out the top 10 nations according to the September rankings and explore how many points they have won or lost since the July 18 rankings.

#10 Italy – 1726.31 Points

The most improved team since FIFA rankings in July, Italy has 1726.31 points on the board. Luciano Spalletti’s men have gained 12.02 points, allowing them to hold on to the 10th position in the standings.

Italy played two UEFA Nations League games in the match window. On September 06, they claimed a 3-1 win over France away from home. Three days later, they beat Israel 2-1, once again as the visiting team.

#9 Colombia – 1738.72 Points

One of the three South American nations to make this list, Colombia has 1738.72 points to its name. They have gained 11.4 points since the last time FIFA refreshed the rankings.

Colombia only had one game in the match window, the 2024 Copa America final against Argentina. They fought bravely in the game but ultimately succumbed to a 1-0 defeat.

#8 Portugal – 1752.14 Points

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal is the eighth-highest-ranked soccer-playing nation on the planet. Os Navegadores have gained 10.71 points since July 18, pushing their total to an admirable 1752.14 points.

Portugal have two UEFA Nations League victories to thank for their gains. On September 5, they claimed a hard-fought 2-1 win over Croatia before securing another tricky 2-1 victory over Scotland three days later.

#7 Netherlands – 1759.95 Points

EURO 2024 semi-finalists, the Netherlands, have 1759.95 to their name, good enough to maintain their seventh position in the FIFA men’s rankings. Ronald Koeman’s side has added 1.44 points since July.

Holland played two games in the match window, both of them coming in the UEFA Nations League. On September 7, they claimed a 5-2 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Three days later, the Dutch held rivals Germany to a 2-2 draw.

#6 Belgium – 1768.14 Points

Losing 4.3 points since the FIFA rankings in July, Belgium sits in sixth place in the current standings with 1768.14 points.

Belgium, who crashed out of the 2024 European Championship in the Round of 16, played two games in the September match window. On September 6, they claimed a 3-1 win over Israel in the UEFA Nations League. Three days later, they suffered a 2-0 defeat to France.

#5 Brazil – 1772.02 Points

Five-time FIFA World Cup winners Brazil are in a bit of a mess right now, struggling to play with the flair and guile associated with them. The Selecao has only 1772.02 points on the board, having lost 13.59 points since the July rankings. No team inside the top 10 has lost as many points as Vinicius Jr. and Co. in the last couple of months.

Brazil did not play any game in FIFA’s match window. Their last outing was on July 6, which saw them lose to Uruguay on penalties and exit the 2024 Copa America in the quarter-finals.

#4 England – 1817.28 Points

England have done well for themselves in FIFA’s September 2024 rankings. The Three Lions have 1817.28 points to their name — 5.02 more than they did the last time out.

England played three matches in the window, starting with the 2-1 defeat to Spain on July 14. In the Nations League, however, England put on a confident show, beating both the Republic of Ireland and Finland 2-0 on September 7th and 10th, respectively.

#3 Spain – 1836.42 Points

European champions Spain are in third spot, having amassed 1836.42 so far. La Roja has gained 0.75 points over the last couple of months.

As per FIFA, Spain played three games in the match window. They beat England 2-1 in the 2024 European Championship final on July 14. On September 5, they played out a goalless draw with Serbia in the UEFA Nations. Then on Matchday 2 on September 8, Luis de la Fuente’s side bagged a thumping 4-1 victory over Switzerland.

#2 France – 1851.92 Points

Two-time world champions France are in second place with 1851.92 points to their name. Les Bleus have lost 2.99 points since the FIFA rankings in July.

France played two UEFA Nations League matches during their match window. Didier Deschamps’ men opened with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Italy but returned to winning ways on Matchday 2, beating Belgium 2-0.

#1 Argentina – 1889.02 Points

Reigning world champions Argentina retain their place at the summit, with their total now sitting at a cool 1889.02 points. La Albiceleste has lost 12.46 points since the July rankings.

Lionel Messi and Co. played just one game in the match window — the Copa America final against Colombia on July 14. They came out on top in that game, securing a 1-0 victory.
