Anyone who gives sports opinions for a living will be wrong from time to time. Sunday was one of those times for iconic sports talk show host Jim Rome. On the CBS pregame show, Rome destroyed the New York Jets and New York Giants. The LA-native proclaimed that NYC (or at least New Jersey) is no longer the “center of the football world.” And, while he may be right in the grander scheme, Big Blue and Gang Green epically proved Rome wrong with two historic wins on the same day.

The New York Jets and New York Giants are struggling in 2021

Coming into Week 4, the New York Jets and New York Giants were a combined 0-6.

The Jets are in the first year of yet another rebuild, having jettisoned 2018 top pick Sam Darnold in the offseason and selecting quarterback Zach Wilson in the first round this year. First-time head coach Robert Saleh’s squad hasn’t just lost in 2021. They’ve been run out of the building.

In the Jets’ first three games, they’ve lost by a combined score of 70-20. Wilson had seven interceptions to just two touchdown passes, and Saleh didn’t seem to have any answers.

The Giants got to 0-3 in a more convincing fashion. After a two-touchdown loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 1, the NFC East squad lost the next two games on heartbreaking last-second field goals.

Although the results may be better in blue jerseys than green ones, the L’s are more troubling for the G Men. The Giants are further along in their “rebuild” than the Jets are, yet the records are the same. This is year two for head coach Joe Judge and year three for QB Daniel Jones. If the Giants don’t start showing more signs of life soon, Jones and Judge might not see years three and four in the Big Apple.

Jim Rome, the host of the Jim Rome Show on CBS Radio, is known for his hot takes. This season, he’s been a part of The NFL Today pregame show on CBS to share these takes.

While he correctly predicted a solid day from Aaron Rodgers, his other opinions on Sunday didn’t work out as well.

He praised the Carolina Panthers as a playoff team before a convincing loss to the Dallas Cowboys and said the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would “slap” the New England Patriots and “run it up” before a two-point Bucs win.

The longtime sports talk host saved his toughest take for the New York Giants and New York Jets. Rome eviscerated the two teams ahead of their games against the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans, respectively, saying:

From where I am sitting, [New York football] has never been worse. … [The Giants] are 0-3, and looking at that schedule, I’m just going to go ahead and pencil them in for 0-10. They are that bad. Just as bad as the Jets, who are so much worse than their 0-3 record indicates. They’re not competitive or prepared, or disciplined.

Jim Rome on the Giants and Jets

“New York used to be the center of the football world,” Rome concluded. “But the torch has been passed to LA.”

Rome’s general point was right. The two New York teams are stinking up the league in 2021 and, to that point, hadn’t shown any signs of life.

Unfortunately for Rome, though, the teams that share MetLife Stadium decided to get frisky on Sunday.

The Jets and Giants both won in OT on the same day for the first time ever

Eight quarters of football weren’t enough to get it done for the Giants and Jets on Sunday as both teams’ games went to overtime.

The Giants came back on the Saints from a 21-10 deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game with 31-seconds left in regulation. Jones and company got the ball to start the extra period and drove down and won the game on a 6-yard touchdown run by Saquon Barkley.

The Jets went up 24-17 on the Titans with nine minutes to play but couldn’t hold the lead. Wilson drove his team to an opening field goal in OT before Titans kicker Randy Bullock missed a late attempt to give the Jets their first victory of the Zach Wilson/Robert Saleh Era.

It was the first time since December 22, 2019, that the Giants and Jets won a game on the same day. It was also the first time ever that the two franchises both went to overtime on the same day and came away victorious.

There haven’t been many days like these for New York City football fans lately and, if recent history is a guide, there might not be many more for at least another season or two. For one day at least, Giants and Jets fans can celebrate together and spout a common refrain: have some of that, Jim Rome!
